I traded my regular coffee for one with mushrooms, here's why.
I have a love/hate relationship with coffee. WELL, I love coffee, but coffee does NOT love me. The acidity and caffeine content leave me feeling the woes of adrenal fatigue: jacked up on adrenaline, spiked cortisol, under eye circles, and skin issues. It’s a mess. I gave up coffee for 2 years after college and my symptoms abated. But when I moved to NYC, I found it hard to chase the grind without a cup accompanying me in the morning. At first, I thought I was safe- but a couple months back in the coffee game, the symptoms kicked in. You know that whole bit about insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result... ha *points at myself*
So I began my search for an alternative that wouldn’t sabotage my hormones and came across Four Sigmatic’s Mushroom Coffee. A mixture of organic coffee and powdered medicinal mushroom extracts that boast the ability to provide adrenal support, increase concentration, fight fatigue, and provide steady energy levels without a crash. With HALF the amount of caffeine of an average cup of coffee. Chaga, one of the included mushroom extracts, eliminates coffee jitters and “fights against cell damage...leav[ing] you without the nasty stomach burns like a regular coffee”. Say what?
That all sounded well and good, but MUSHROOM coffee? Sounds...unappetizing. To my surprise, the reviews were glaringly positive. Lots of reviewers had kicked their cup of joe in preference to mushroom coffee’s steady energy boost without adrenal burnout. And for the taste? Many claimed that it tasted like a regular cup of coffee, with no mushroom taste to speak of. I decided to give it a go and ordered the mushroom coffee with lion’s mane and chaga.
THE FIRST CUP
The coffee comes in pre portioned instant packets. I tore open the first packet and mixed with hot water. Not only did it look like coffee, but it tasted like coffee too, offering the same comforting depth and earthiness. As promised, I was energized (not wired) and didn’t feel anxious post coffee jitters- I was focused yet calm.
After two months of drinking mushroom coffee daily, I no longer feel like I’m in perpetual fight or flight mode. My skin looks youthful and my stress hormones have reclaimed their balance.
The hardest part for me has been switching up my coffee ritual. I mean don’t get me wrong, I still have my occasional fancy coffee (almond milk cappuccino ILY), but I do miss visiting my fav baristas at my local coffee bar every morning. The point is, listen to your body. I am NOT demonizing coffee. Regular coffee has many health benefits and is high in antioxidants. BUT, if you’re body is sensitive to caffeine or acidity like mine, give these magic mushrooms a shot!
Note: tried the whole matcha thing, not my cup of tea. I’m not funny.
